When Half the City's Toilets Close on a Weekend

When Half the City's Toilets Close on a Weekend

Nearly half of Stockholm's public toilets closed over the weekend.

The reason: a gap between vendor contracts. Nobody thought to ensure seamless coverage when one agreement ended and another began.

"It's unfortunate it turned out this way," said Malinda Flodman from the city's traffic office. The understatement of the week.

Meanwhile, the government announced it will investigate letting elderly residents choose the gender of their home care workers. The proposal follows several high-profile assault cases within eldercare. Nike Örbrink from the Christian Democrats called it "an important victory for Sweden's elderly."

Elsewhere in the city, police opened a murder investigation after finding a body in western Stockholm. One person has been arrested.

And in a story that stretches back decades, Kerstin seeks accountability for her late son Robert, who lived at Eolshälls boys' home between 1977 and 1990. The facility was run by a convicted sex offender, with Stockholm's support. Despite warnings about abuse, the city never acted.

Some failures are logistical. Others run deeper.

The toilets should reopen once the paperwork sorts itself out. The other matters may take longer to resolve.
